COVID-19 attacks everyone. It doesn’t matter your age, your socioeconomic status, or whether you’re a celebrity or just an average American. Everyone is at risk of contracting the virus that causes the disease, but not everyone has an equal chance of dying from it. Statistics show that the elderly and African Americans have been dying from the disease at higher rates, likely due to inequities in the American health care industry.

Over the last few weeks, celebrities have come forward to share their diagnosis of COVID-19. To some of them, it is almost like a badge of honor. “Look what I have and am able to survive.” To others, it is nothing more than a death sentence as some great celebrities have lost their lives to the virus that causes the disease responsible for the global pandemic.

CNN presenter Chris Cuomo, who is the brother of the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, contracted COVID-19. He has been in isolation since symptoms started flaring up and said that he had a number of bizarre symptoms that left him “just soaked (with sweat) and scared.”

Now that Cuomo has been fighting the virus for some time, he said he is “wise to the beast” and knows what to do to fight it best. Because he has been winning the war against COVID-19, he wants other people to know his experience so they, too, can fight off the virus and live to tell their story.

Cuomo said that he barely had the strength to lift his hand over his head or to hold his breath for more than ten seconds. But after a call with an expensive pulmonary expert, Cuomo understood that fighting the virus was up to him.

“You’ve got to do the things that will beat this virus. You’ve got to breathe deep when it hurts—and it hurts,” he said.

Deep breathing brings more oxygen into your lungs. This can help you survive the disease that is killing off thousands of Americans. Because COVID-19 is a respiratory disease, it attacks your lungs, which means it can choke out the oxygen that you want to inhale into your body.

“COVID is banking on you doing nothing,” Cuomo explained. “It wants us passive, on our backs. The answer has to be to do everything.”

Cuomo is a fighter. He did what he had to. He drank a lot of water. He took fever medication like Tylenol. And he breathed deeply to get as much oxygen into his body as possible.

He knows that it is not an easy fight to win. COVID-19 is killing a lot of people. But when you take precautions and do the deep breathing exercises, you can survive the sickness that has people knocked down and out.

He shared his advice on CNN, and lots of people have watched it and are taking it to heart. Because Chris Cuomo was able to fight back against COVID-19, he wants to share what he learned to empower more people to survive the pandemic.
