Joy Behar has been a recognizable celebrity for decades. She first appeared on The View back in 1997 when the show premiered. As one of the program’s original hosts, Behar has a lot of sway on the show and knows how to throw her weight around to get what she wants, including a golden parachute when her retirement comes. During her time on The View, Behar does not hold back when talking about her husband, Steve Janowitz – but there’s a secret about her connection to Janowitz that has only just come to light.
Behar and Janowitz first met in a very extreme way. While people meet online these days and others still meet at the coffee shop, Behar first got a look at her soon-to-be husband while he was strutting around, showing off his stuff at a nudist colony.
After spotting Janowitz at the nudist colony, Behar said she liked what she saw and approached him. The pair started dating back in 1982. She had recently ended things with her first husband, Joe Behar, whom she was married to from 1965 to 1981. Because she wanted something fresh and exciting to spice up her love life, Behar was unable to look away from Janowitz, especially since she knew what he was packing.
For twenty-nine years, Behar and Janowitz dated. They did not wed and kept things casual just like they wanted it. Although Janowitz, a retired teacher, desperately wanted to marry Behar, she was playing hard to get. She broke things off with him in 2009.
She said she was getting cold feet and didn’t know how to proceed.
“Actually, I got cold feet again, so I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s off the table. What’ll happen is, when I decide to do it, I’ll do it, and then everybody will know I did it. I can’t make up my mind.”
Behar jokingly admitted that she waited as long as possible to tie the knot with Janowitz because she was not eager to be a daughter-in-law again.
“I waited until all the parents were dead. So I have no in-laws at all. He has none, and I have none. Because marriage is mostly about in-laws, I find. They always want you to visit them and come for lasagna.”
Now, Behar and Janowitz have been married for about a decade. They’ve gone through a lot of changes to their lives and relationship since Behar first spotted the love of her life at the nudist colony. Now that they’ve tasted the best each has to offer, they enjoy spending quiet evenings at home watching Hoarders and other reality television shows.
It may have taken Behar nearly three decades to come to the decision to marry the man of her dreams, but now that she has, her life is just the way she wants it. Not every Hollywood celebrity can say that they have their romantic life locked down just the way they like it.
